All true. I live at 7500 ft and if I'm pulling trailers its normally at 5000-7500 ft - the Silverton-Durango episode was a bit of an outlier. If a person was pulling 5000 lb trailers infrequently at sea level on flat ground, a Tacoma would probably do ok. But if a person was pulling a 5000 lb trailer frequently, or in hilly country, or at much elevation at all, its just not the right tool for the job in my opinion. Don't get me wrong - I'm really happy with the vehicle. It carries a decent load and is a great off-roader. But pulling 5000 lb trailers isn't its strong point - its short on power and its clutch and suspension aren't really optimized for it.

If its the same or similar part to the one in the Tacoma, I was told it can't be lubed - the whole unit has to be replaced. Mine's noisy in cold weather but ok during summer. JeffB

Sometimes when there's no grip, the front wheels will rotate in opposite directions causing the tractor to spin as it slides down the hill. Then the coveralls have to be replaced too. JeffB

Not sure I'd call it a big difference, but its definitely better since I'm getting more metal on the ground. Its hard to quantify though since we've had much less snow and ice buildup this year. Good luck with your house and your duo-grips! JeffB

If its 20 deg outside, the hydraulics are definitely going to be noisy. The description of noise when operating the loader or 3ph, and of the noise abating as the unit warms up sounds normal to me.

The bracket from NH uses the same mounting holes and bolts as the hazard flasher on the right side. Its bends around the back of the ROPS, placing the work light behind the ROPS and leaving the hazard flasher unobstructed. -JeffB

My neighbor hangs a small can of mothballs in the engine compartment of his plow truck to keep the chipmunks out. He removes the can whenever he needs to use the truck. Apparently works pretty well. -JeffB

Bill, I had the exact same crack on mine. It was caused by the mounting bolt being overtorqued, which tore out the threaded insert. The warranty covered it. Another thing to check on is whether the air cleaner bracket (and also the power steering reservoir) interfers with the hood. I had this problem on mine also, and it resulted in another piece of cracked fiberglass. I had to modify the bracket to provide clearance. -JeffB

My 3ph has been working ok too. I can get down force on the loader. However, its only enough to barely lift the front end when I have the engine runnning at full rpm. Its been that way since the tractor was delivered. Quick connect couplers are in good shape. No noises out of the ordinary. I'll try Murf's cure as soon as it stops raining. - JeffB

I stumbled across another useful replacement for the clevis pins and split rings used for the folding ROPS. Category 0 toplink pins. The length is about the same as the original pins and they have a good taper on the end to make them easy to insert. They have a knob on the head end that's easy to grab with gloves on and a hole in them big enough to accept a lynch pin, which is also easy to do with gloves. - JeffB

Bruce, I've been using ladder chains over ag tires on icy hills this winter. I got them from tirechains.com. IMHO, they don't help much. The crosslinks will immediately fall between the lugs, and if your tires are fairly new, the lugs will stick up above the chain. You won't get much bite. On several occasions, I've lost traction on the ice and gone sliding down the hill. Definitely gets your attention. I suspect that on hard ice, anything without studs will be of marginal help. Next year I'll either buy a set of studded chains (Trygg Tractor TS chains from www.whitemountainchain.com or Babac BSS chains from www.wallingfords.com) or run ice screws (available from motorcycle stores or www.denniskirk.com). Duogrip chains from tirechains.com might also work, but I want the studs. The Trygg and Babac chains lay a mesh pattern over the lugs so they won't fall between them. I priced the Trygg chains - a pair fitting 11.2x24 rear tires cost about $375, the ones for the 7-14 front cost about $233. Plus about $100 shipping. Make sure to check the clearance between your tires and fenders on the rear and between tires and frame and hydraulic lines on the front when the wheels are turned to the stops. You may have to reverse your rear wheels to gain clearance between side of tire and fender. On the front, you may not be able to run chains, or you may have to run a longer stop bolt to prevent the chains from contacting something. If there isn't enough clearance for chains, then ice screws become the only option. Which isn't a bad thing since they are a lot cheaper than chains. BTW, if you still want to try ladder chains, I've got a pair of 11.2-24 and a pair of 7-14 I'd be willing to part with... :) -JeffB

I'm looking at purchasing a PTO driven chipper for my TC33D. The models that I'm considering include the Bear Cat 74554, Vermeer BC606 PTO, Danuser 2469P, Befco BM6 800, and Valby CH 160. Does anyone have comments on any of these units? -JeffB

I bypassed the switch activated by the left brake pedal so that I could set the speed control and free up my foot for braking. Whether its a useful feature depends on what you're doing with the tractor. I use it when I'm plowing snow with a rear blade to keep the front end from sliding off into the ditch. Its more effective than attempting to steer out. - Jeff B
